Letter from the President: Como International Club Update 2021

Elena Markova Como International ClubDear members,

I hope you are in good spirits and good health. In these unprecedented times, I wanted to provide you with an update on the Como International Club.

Sadly, another club’s season has ended without the possibility to restart our activities. Still, we are full of optimism, and we hope we will reopen our doors safely in September 2021.

Many changes have happened during this period, and these times have been challenging for the club. However, I’m confident that the Como International Club will restart soon, with remarkable new events and initiatives, preserving the past heritage and fuelling the future.

Our international community is outstanding, and I can’t wait for us to meet again.

In the meantime, I send my very best wishes to all of you and your families for a safe, happy and fabulous summer.

Take care of yourself and your loved ones.

Elena Markova

Como International Club Activities: Update

Dear Members,
We hope that you have a great summer!
With this email, we would like to send you an update about the current situation regarding the Como International Club opening.
The Italian law provisions in force till September 7th concerning private social gatherings require constant maintenance of 1 m distance between the participants (in each direction).
It is also necessary to check the temperature, wear the mask, and have a different entrance and exit.
Therefore, the board is not in the condition to organize a coffee morning according to the mentioned rules.
We are monitoring the situation, and as soon as we can resume the club activities in the usual conditions, we will inform you.
Board of Como International Club

CIC: see you soon!

Dear Members,

Another club’s season is over. We want to take this opportunity to thank you for being the members of the Como International Club, for every experience shared friendship made, and the good times we had together.

This season, due to COVID-19, we could not accomplish all our goals, and we would like to thank all the members who organized online club activities during the tough period.

We hope that after the summer, we will be able to meet again at the Yacht Club, here in Como.

We wish you a great summer, stay safe, and enjoy your vacation!

Thank you again, and we will notify you once a Coffee Meeting date is set.

APRIL, 2020

Dear members,

At the end of February, when the first news of the coronavirus situation in Italy reached the CIC board, and we had to postpone our cooking pizza masterclass, it seemed so temporary and unreal…
We absolutely could not imagine at that time the cancellation of all our March & April events and the fact that we might also have to move the 50th Anniversary celebration of the International Como Club planned for the end of May 2020 to September.

Within a matter of days, the whole world was thrown into quarantine, and the period became a challenge for global trotters and international people.
The current situation, most notably for our members, with families located all over the globe, has split some of our members from their beloved ones and blocked others from returning home.

The Como International Club, alongside its members, is facing a new reality, and we have no choice but to accept it and stand together as a community.

Here are a few things that we would love to do these days:

All the membership fees paid for 2020 will be extended until January 2021.
We will introduce and have our first-ever virtual event!
On April 8 at 18:00, Eleonora Scholes and Alena Klimtsova will organize an Online Aperitive and Wine Q&A. During this virtual event, Eleonora, a wine expert & journalist, will answer the questions about wine. To participate, please send your skype nickname and questions to Alena: a.alena1986@gmail.com And don’t forget to have a glass of wine handy
Anne Marie Delaby, an artist as well as our member, on April 4 at 10:00 is organizing an Online Workshop of Art Therapy. Anne invites everyone to participate! You can register to vie email: annedelabyweb@gmail.com
If you would like to share some of your knowledge, organize a masterclass, a virtual workout, aperitive or have an online chat with club members – please send your ideas to: info@comointernationalclub.it We will be happy to assist in organizing virtual club events!

I hope that this situation gets resolved very soon, and we meet again for coffee at the lovely Yacht Club of Como and participate in the fantastic activities created by the tremendous Como International Club Events’ Team.

I’m looking to the future with optimism and share love and strength for all of us.

Stay safe and keep in touch!

Kind regards,

Elena Markova

February in Italy is a Carnival period. The tradition of a vast winter festival dates back to the 1100s. Till date, millions of people from all over the world are wearing costumes and coming to the feast! It is celebrated in many different ways, depending on the region. Traditionally Italian Carnival involves a parade, masks, music, and lots of parties.

The Venice carnival is a world-renowned event, which is famous for its extraordinary masks. There are many other widely known Italian carnivals such as Carnevale di Viareggio, Carnevale di Ivrea, Putignano e Cento.

Did you know that Lake Como also has remarkable carnival traditions? Every year Schignano, a tiny village on the picturesque hills above Lake Como, performs a particular carnival parade of ancient origins.
The wooden masks, carved by hand from the Walnut Root, are jealously guarded by owners and granted exclusively for the Carnival. This event is very theatrical and stenographic.

So, this month Como International Club is organizing a visit to Schignano Carnival. Don’t miss it! Let’s enjoy the incredible atmosphere of the Italian Carnival together!

Elena Markova, President

Quote of the month: “Happiness is simply a temporary condition that proceeds unhappiness. Fortunately for us, it works the other way around as well. But it’s all a part of the carnival, isn’t it?”― Federico Fellini

Pizza Cooking Class – Feb 25th

This cooking class in an authentic restaurant Il Pomodorino in the very heart of Como is a must!

During the pizza cooking class, the pizzaiolo will guide us through the whole process of preparation and give us life hacks on how to cook true Italian pizza.

Carnival In Schignano – Feb 22th

The Carnival of Schignano – a small village in the Valle Intelvi – takes place on the Saturday and the Tuesday before Lent.
The Carnival displays two different characters: The Fair and The Ugly.
Local sculptors create splendid wooden masks for the occasion.

The Fair – mascarùn – wear finely decorated clothing with ribbons and jewellery displaying their wealth as well as their polite and elegant behaviour. The Ugly wear ragged clothes, necklaces made out of beans and animal hides. They carry around loud bells and display scary and deformed faces.

Meeting of all masks is at 14.00. The following procession passes through all the districts of the village. Visitors of this traditional, exceptional and unique event are also able to enjoy local specialties offered at the stalls.

Lebanese Lunch – Feb 14th

Join us for a delicious Lebanese lunch to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Start with a selection of meze appetizers for the table, followed by your choice of main course (a choice between a mixed Meat platter or a vegetarian mix option), and end with a Lebanese dessert and coffee. Price includes a drink (soft drink or a glass of Lebanese wine)

Visit To Historic Jewellery – Feb 11th

The story of Zanotti jewellery began in 1940 when Alfredo Zanotti founded his shop in the heart of the historical centre of Como. The experience of its founder has been handed down for two generations, first to his son Ettore then to his niece Stefania. During our visit, Stefania will guide us through showroom and workshop and tell us the story of her family and the store.

Carnival Potluck Lunch – Feb 7th

We look forward to seeing you at our buffet lunch, to spend a fun-filled afternoon in the rooms of the DLF (Dopolavoro Ferrovieri), beside the Como main railway station. Please dress up accordingly and inform the organizers on time on what dish you will be bringing for the buffet. Friends and children are welcome.

Mary Poppins Musical – Teatro Nazionale Milano – Feb 5th

A bus transfer is organised to see this theatre performance presented with 32 actors and a live orchestra in Milan. We have booked the central seats (row 12) to have the best visibility and the performance starts at 8.45pm.
Although this event will be in Feb, seats and spaces on the bus are limited so please book immediately with Marie Louise Schutt if you are interested. Further details and departure time will be communicated closer to the time.
Transfer and ticket cost is 60 EUR per person.
Email Marie Louise on marie_louise_schuett@hotmail.com to RSVP

Happy 2020! I wish you all a magical and beautiful new year!
A new decade brings so many expectations, new challenges, and fresh starts.
The New Year also gives us another chance to improve ourselves and to open up to new opportunities.
I wish for each one of us to have more time for friends and exciting events in the coming year. Friendliness and fun are both very life-enhancing, and the CIC community is an excellent source for both!
Our club is growing, and this month we also offer museum visits and a masterclass at the historic Coffee shop founded in Como.
Likewise, if you’re dreaming of seeing Bellagio in its authentic form, with the absence of crowds and tourists, do join One Pearl of Lake Como tour at the end of January for a wonderful experience.
I’m glad to mention that in January, our new member Anne Delaby is organizing Art Therapy lessons. These classes aims to help participants to get to know themselves better and discover how the “beautiful” can influence positively.
Meanwhile, as we get back to our regular activities, our team is working hard to find and create exclusive events to offer in spring.

A New Year is like a blank book, and together we can write a beautiful story of Como International Club in 2020!

Sincerely yours,

Elena Markova
